I, Emily, offer Pre & Post Natal Personal Training & Nutrition sessions to pregnant clients to help you take control of this big change that is happening to your body. Your body is doing an amazing thing by taking a small egg, lots of cells and hormones to create an entirely new human being but this process can put the mind and body under a lot of new stresses that have never been coped with before. For example body may experience:
- Nausea, sore breasts and food aversions
- Looking and feeling bloated
- Weight gain
- Feeling as though you might wet yourself or that you constantly need to go to the toilet which could lead to an infection
- No longer being able to lift heavy things without help
- Anxiety or depression
- Difficulty breathing normally
- Post pregnancy blues and finding it tough to get motivated to look after yourself as well as your baby.
Getting pregnant, being pregnant and after pregnancy is an exciting time but challenging for your body. Many believe that exercising during this period can be unsafe for you and your baby but many studies are now starting to prove that it can actually help alleviate some or all of the above.
Here are some of the benefits to exercising and eating well whilst pregnant and after giving birth:
- Improved maternal wellbeing which means better coping mechanisms before, during and after pregnancy
- Reduction of common complaints including leg cramps, nausea, high or low blood pressure, constipation, varicose veins, diabetes, blood clots, fatigue and bloating
- Control of weight gain kept within normalised levels
- Decreased stress, anxiety and fatigue which can in turn improve sleep
- Easier resumption of pre-pregnancy activities whatever they may be
- Improvements of pelvic floor function and prevention of urinary incontinence
- Reduction in the likelihood of the abdominal wall separating (Diastasis recti) which means returning to exercise after birth can be done quicker and more easily
- Improved self-esteem, mood and boost energy levels as well as indirectly improving posture and body awareness
- Maintenance of any current cardiovascular and muscular fitness levels by preparing the body for the endurance of birth in addition to developing new techniques to adapt breathing patterns to compensate for shallower lung capacity.
And even more positively let’s think about the HUGE positives of pregnancy overall:
- You constantly think and feel great about the fact that you are making a new human who will look to you for care and love
- You can play the pregnancy ‘hormone’ card and no one can claim you are a faker and then you can get away with it (hehehe!)
- You get larger breasts and they look blooming lovely
- Your skin finally glows without having to get a tan because of the increase of blood volume, oestrogen and progesterone
- Your hair gets thicker and lusher
- Your sense of smell gets stronger so you now know how the dog feels
- Your belly button will get a clean when it pops out
- And best of all you are never alone and your baby can hear you.
Remember it is safe for both mother and baby to partake in exercise whilst pregnant and after delivery if done in a controlled manner and certain exercises are avoided. I can provide expert advice on how to exercise before, during and after pregnancy so you can develop improved maternal wellbeing for you and your baby.
